Marty LaPointe, Founding Partner

mlapointe-240x300Mr. LaPointe concentrates his practice in labor and employment law, defending employers in discrimination lawsuits and other employment-related contract and tort actions. Mr. LaPointe also represents private and public organizations in a variety of commercial litigation matters including constitutional challenges, personal injury defense and breach of contract cases. Mr. LaPointe has distinguished himself as a trial attorney, successfully defending companies in employment lawsuits and arguing numerous appeals. For many years, Mr. LaPointe represented a Fortune 100 corporation throughout the United States, contributing to the efficient and successful resolution of an array of employment actions. He represents large national corporate clients, as well as Chicago-area businesses of all sizes.

Because of Mr. LaPointe’s extensive employment litigation experience, he and his colleagues are able to provide sound advice to managers with employment-related questions. An integral part of the firm’s practice involves the nationwide defense of EEOC and state agency charges under several nationwide Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) programs. As part of a comprehensive EPLI risk management program, the firm responds to employment-related questions through an 800 Helpline.

Formerly a law clerk for the Honorable Charles R. Norgle, Sr. of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Mr. LaPointe has spoken and written on a wide range of employment issues. He was a member of the Editorial Board and a Contributor/Writer of the Journal of Employment Discrimination Law (CCH, Inc.) and published several articles in the Journal. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of the Labor Law Journal (CCH, Inc.) and the Defense Research Institute Employment Law Steering Committee.

Mr. LaPointe received his B.A. from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, summa cum laude, and his J.D. from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, Order of the Coif and with high honors, in 1987.

Susan M. Troester, Partner

stroester-240x300Ms. Troester focuses her practice exclusively on defending and counseling the firm’s small business, not-for-profit and public organization clients on a full range of employee related issues. Much of her practice is devoted to proactive counseling with the aim of helping the employer achieve their business goals and organizational mission, while at the same time creating the optimal work environment for employees. Ms. Troester assists employers nationwide in responding to age, race, national origin, gender and disability discrimination claims and defends Illinois employers in claims in state and federal court, as well as the Illinois Human Rights Commission.

Some of Ms. Troester’s recent successful litigation matters include serving as second-chair trial counsel defending a national corporation in a Title VII gender discrimination trial in the Northern District of Illinois. She also successfully obtained summary judgment in favor of one of the nation’s largest hospice organizations in two separate state court discrimination cases.

In addition, Ms. Troester worked for ten years in managing not-for-profit organizations and raising funds to support legal services and law student scholarships. As Director of Operations and Director of Development for Life Span, an agency serving domestic violence victims throughout Cook County, Ms. Troester oversaw the provision of legal services to 4,500 victims annually. She assisted the Executive Director and Board of Directors in raising $3 million each year to support a staff of thirty lawyers, paralegals and social workers. She also ensured compliance with the agency’s private and government funder requirements, and oversaw all aspects of fiscal planning, human resources and board development.

Ms. Troester received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern Illinois University, summa cum laude, and her J.D. degree from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, with high honors, in 1996. She was awarded the Order of the Coif, served as a member of the Chicago-Kent Law Review, and chaired a foundation that funded public interest law organizations. Ms. Troester is a member of the Chicago Bar Association.

Teri Pierce, Senior Counsel

tpierce-200x300Ms. Pierce received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1977, where she was a Wellesley College Scholar. She received her J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School in 1981.

Ms. Pierce has concentrated her practice in all aspects of labor and employment law, defending employers in employment lawsuits, and representing management in collective bargaining and arbitrations. She has been involved in numerous trials in state and federal court, and in administrative agencies, including the NLRB. For many years, Ms. Pierce represented a Fortune 100 corporation throughout the United States, supervising ten associates and providing a unified approach and efficient resolution for a diverse range of employment lawsuits. Ms. Pierce has distinguished herself as an employment litigator, successfully defending many renowned national corporate clients. Ms. Pierce has argued a number of appeals including in the Seventh Circuit, Tenth Circuit, and the New Mexico Supreme Court.

Ms. Pierce is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell, and has contributed to the education of others through many employment-related public speaking engagements for various organizations, including the Employment Law Institute and the National College of District Attorneys. She has also provided sexual harassment training for employers.

Along with her legal career, Ms. Pierce has committed herself to extensive community service, particularly over the past fifteen years. Her civic contributions are numerous, including serving as Lead mediator in nearly one hundred community mediations, serving on numerous not-for-profit Boards, and serving as the Attorney Coach for a high school mock trial team.

 

 

S. Leigh Jeter, Senior Counsel

Ms. Jeter has represented public and private sector employers in labor and employment matters across the nation for over twenty years.  In that role, she has successfully represented clients in harassment, discrimination, disability and leave-related lawsuits, grievance arbitrations, unfair labor practices charges, and various administrative agency matters.

Ms. Jeter also has extensive experience conducting neutral workplace investigations on behalf of public and private sector employers in a wide range of industries.  Over the course of her career, she has conducted investigations into allegations of workplace misconduct, including those alleging discrimination, harassment, retaliation, failure to accommodate, performance or misconduct issues, wage and hour violations, embezzlement, fraud, assault and battery, collective bargaining agreement violations, and ethics and compliance violations.

As part of her proactive approach to helping clients, Ms. Jeter regularly conducts training for employers on a wide array of employment matters, including the prevention of discrimination and harassment, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Family Medical Leave Act, hiring and recruitment practices, performance management and discipline, supervisor best practices, and appropriate investigation techniques. The Department of Justice and EEOC have approved Ms. Jeter to provide required training in connection with consent decrees and conciliation agreements.

Ms. Jeter also regularly counsels public and private sector employers on avoiding employee legal disputes.  In addition to working with clients to establish best practices and appropriate policies designed to minimize the risk of litigation, she provides valuable advice on employee discipline and terminations, performance counseling, workplace misconduct, leaves of absence, harassment and discrimination complaints, leave and accommodation policies, fitness for duty considerations, union grievances, unfair labor practice charges, and other labor and employment issues.

Ms. Jeter received a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Carolina in 1993, where she majored in biology, theatre and speech.  In 1996, she received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.  During law school, she served as Articles Editor for the ABA Real Property and Probate and Trust Journal, was as a member of the South Carolina Environmental Law Journal, and participated in Moot Court.

glivolsi-240x300Ms. LiVolsi received a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She graduated from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, earning a Certificate in Labor and Employment Law. While attending law school, Ms. LiVolsi served as an extern with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She was an active member of the Chicago-Kent National Trial Team and was a TYLA Regional Semi-Finalist. She also received the Warren Wolfson Award for Excellence in Advocacy, Leadership & Professionalism.

Ms. LiVolsi focuses her practice exclusively on defending and counseling management on a full range of employment-related issues. Ms. LiVolsi assists employers nationwide in responding to age, race, national origin, gender and disability discrimination claims, and she defends Illinois employers in state and federal court, as well as in the Illinois Department of Human Rights.

bsharpe-240x300Brian Sharpe received a B.A. with Distinction from Purdue University, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Loyola University Chicago, School of Law. While attending law school, Mr. Sharpe served as a teaching assistant in the legal writing department for two years. As a student-attorney under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711, Mr. Sharpe worked at the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, where he participated in several bench trials. Prior to and during law school, Mr. Sharpe worked in video production, creating and editing content for several cable networks, including HGTV, DIY Network and Fine Living.

Mr. Sharpe focuses his practice exclusively on defending and counseling management on a full array of employment-related issues. Mr. Sharpe assists employers nationwide in responding to age, race, national origin, gender and disability discrimination claims, and he defends Illinois employers in state and federal court, as well as in the Illinois Department of Human Rights.

Angela Lam attended the University of Chicago, where she earned a Master of Public Policy, with honors, in 2004, and A.B. degrees in Public Policy, with honors, and International Studies in 2003. Angela received her J.D. in 2009, magna cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School, where she was an Articles Submission Editor for the Minnesota Law Review. She also served as an extern to U.S. District Judge David S. Doty of the District of Minnesota.

From January 2010 to March 2016, Angela worked for two large law firms, including 5+ years in San Francisco and Palo Alto, California. She has focused her practice exclusively on employment law defense and counseling. Angela has litigated employment cases in federal and state court, including defending claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act, Title VII, and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. Angela is a member of the State Bars of California and Illinois, and an expert California employment law contributor for Lexis Practice Advisor.
